PURPOSE OF THE FUND:
A scholarship program for members, and their families, of the Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA), Northwest Region has been established as a living memorial to the late W. Vernie Reed, General Secretary-Treasurer of LIUNA. Through the generosity of Brother Reed's friends and associates, a self-perpetuating fund will provide a program of yearly scholarships to assist eligible worthy students and members in good standing in furthering their education. The first award was made in the Spring of 1981. Scholarships are
usually awarded before July.
The LIUNA Northwest Region includes all Local Unions located throughout Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, Alaska, and Montana as well as four provinces of Western Canada including British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, the Northwest, Yukon and Nunavut territories.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
• Members in good standing
• Spouses, children, grandchildren, and step-children of members in good standing (includes active, retired, and deceased members) of Local Unions of the LIUNA Northwest Region.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES:
The exact nature and content of the scholarship program will be determined on an annual basis by the Board of Directors. There shall be no discrimination based on race, color, creed, national origin, age or gender identity in the selection process or the administration of the scholarship program.
The following general scholarship criteria may be considered in making the selections:
Academic attainments (i.e.: test scores, grade point average, class ranking)
Character
Need
Anticipated field of study
Extra-curricular accomplishments including leadership and service
Employment history
Other (as may seem applicable to the scholarship program in question)
